The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is mandatory for all law students. The Bar Council of India (BCI) conducts the exam twice in a calendar year. This exam is conducted to assess the capability of an advocate to practice legal profession in India. Once a candidates qualifies in the bar examination, he/she is then awarded the 'Certificate of Practice' by the BCI.

Eligibility criteria


  • The candidate should have qualified LL.B degree programme (either 3 years or 5 years) and the law degree must have been awarded by any Indian institute.
  • The candidate must be a citizen of India.
  • He/she should be enrolled with any State Bar Council.
  • He/she should be possessing an Adovate ID Card/Enrollment Card (issued by the State Bar Council).
  • Candidates reserved categories (SC/ST/EBC/PwD), need to have the respective certificates for claiming the reservation.

Syllabus

The subjects are taken from the syllabi prescribed by the Bar Council of India for the three-year and five-year Ll.B. programmes at law schools in India. Questions from 19 subject areas will be asked.
